S3-4 Debates

After students had learnt some basic debating skills before their examinations, 2 semi-finals for S3 and S4 classes were held in June. The winners entered the finals in July. The motion for S3 was “That Chinese medicine works better than Western medicine” (3D Affirmative vs 3C Opposition) and the one for S4 was “That academic qualifications ensure success in life” (4A Affirmative vs 4C Opposition). The panel of adjudicators included our English, Chemistry and Chinese History teachers.

 

Students benefitted from the activities by learning different debating skills, which increased their confidence in expressing their thoughts in English. They also learnt how to organize their arguments effectively and to adopt an appropriate manner of delivery. Their critical thinking skills were honed and leadership skills were enhanced.

 

All contestants’ performance was satisfactory, as they were able to use various techniques in the competitions. With Audience Award, the audience could have their say in deciding who the winners were, which also facilitated peer-learning.
