When we say jet lag, we mean we feel spirited or tired, a feeling different from most people in the same time zone, somewhat disoriented.  For example, after taking a 10-hour flight, chances are your body clock will not be regulated until 2 days later. When others are sleeping, your body is wide awake, and vice versa.  This happens to many of us, even when we are on the ground, for our friends are in a different time zone; and if we want to have face time with them, then one of us will have to lose sleep.

But I am describing another form of jet lag, that my body tells me that we should have a long summer break, but the reality is not so. The swap of holidays shortens this summer; teachers now have a week holiday in the sun, as opposed to a month of carefree summer.  Although we hypnotized ourselves saying that we already had the holiday in March, we were actually advised not to go out at that time because of the aggravating situation. All lost, so to speak.

Life goes on. In this month, we welcome another batch of Form 1 students who are eager to begin their secondary school life.  They will feel somewhat disoriented, like their predecessors; a few weeks ago, they were the most senior ones in the school, and now they are the youngest and the greenest.  That change puts many in disorientation. Some students will settle in in a few weeks, others may take months. Once we accept that we are in a different institution, or even in a different district, so we need to approach learning differently, we can then fit in with greater ease.  I keep repeating that Form 1 lessons are 3 times harder than primary 6’s, Form 2’s is 3 times harder than Form 1’s.  If a student only wishes to put an hour’s effort in learning, like he did before, that new one hour has to be very productive, very focused, or one should prepare to work longer.

I hope all students who get into the next level will find their ways to be more productive in learning. Happy Summer.
